1.  Use only Licensed Contractors for repair work over $500.  It's the law, and it protects you.  Learn more from the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), click here.  The CSLB is a division of the Department of Consumer Affairs. 

   **  Remember - if they aren't licensed, there's a good chance they can't get a license. **

2.  Find a contractor:  Click here to search the VCE Membership List online by the type of work you need done.  For example, for contractors who specialize in home building and repair, use "General Building Contractors - New Residential or Remodel or Repair".

3.  Check the contractor's license at the CSLB, get multiple bids and call their references.  Get everything in writing.  Never pay more than 10% or $1,000 (whichever is less) before work starts.  For more how to's, go to the CSLB online library for consumers.
